Winner, Winner, Cupcakes for Dinner!
By Stephen O'Neal on 04/09/2013

There are a few events in history that will forever ring out as harbingers of change for the betterment of humanity.  The Renaissance, the Roman Empire, the invention of the Scientific Method, the Industrial Revolution - while significant - can all be torn out of your children's textbooks to make way for...

The Day Sugar Mama's Won Cupcake Wars

Not significant enough for you, you say?  Overstating the accomplishment, you say?  Phooey, we say.  Consider the following:
  • Cupcakes have been known to prevent leprosy.  Proof: Prior to the invention of cupcakes, leprosy was a common affliction.  Now cupcakes are available at almost every bakery, while almost none of the purveyors of cupcakes have leprosy.
  • Every time you eat a cupcake, a kitten's life is spared.  Proof:  Go buy a cupcake and take it home.  Make eye contact with your favorite cat.  Eat the cupcake.  Your cat will survive.
For those of you who don't know how the show works, Olivia and Andrea had to come up with 4 new flavors on the spot.  To celebrate their success, Sugar Mama's will feature one of the winning flavors each week for the next 4 weeks.

Come on down and try them all!
Sugar Mama's on Cupcake Wars!
By Stephen O'Neal on 04/03/2013

Yeah, I said it - this Sunday, April 7th, local beauties and masters of confection with the convection oven Olivia O'Neal and Andrea Leck are vying for attention and retention of their reputation and redemption of Austin's foodie ascension using only their baking inventions to make an impression.  They'll be taking on 3 other bakeries in a match to the death on The Food Network's Cupcake Wars!!!

The winner garners the opportunity to cater the release party for Weird Al Yankovich's newest book (oddly enough titled "Weird Al: The Book"), in which he chronicles his harrowing experiences as a spiritual leader and an accordion-for-hire in the majestic foothills of Everest.  I haven't read the book, but that's the impression I got from the cover.  Not only will the winner get the honor of participating in this event, they also take home a cash prize worth over half a million!  Rupees!

Please tune in at 8pm/7c this Sunday and cheer on these hometown girls.  If they win, they promise to buy each and every one of you a drink!  Of water!
Thanksgiving Pies, The Phone Lines Are OPEN!
By Olivia Guerra O'Neal on 11/02/2012

Hello beautiful people!

It's finally cooling down here in Austin and we're currently nursing a candy hangover from the sugariest day of the year. Now that we're full on into Fall, guess what's only 20 days away? THANKSGIVING! We know you'll be busy brining turkey's and whipping up the fluffiest mashed potatoes known to man, so let your Sugar Mama do the baking!

This year's pie menu will be:

Apple Pie
Pumpkin Pie
Triple Berry Pie
Banana Cream Pie
Coconut Cream Pie
Chocolate Cream Pie
Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie

And a BRAND NEW PIE just for Thanksgiving! SWEET POTATO GINGERSNAP WITH TOASTED MERINGUE! Ehrmegerd, can't you just taste the deliciousness?!

Just like Mama, we won't let you get caught pieless on the pie-est day of the year, so to encourage you to check this most important thing off your list, we'll be running a special through the end of Sunday!

Place your Thanksgiving pie pre-order and receive 10% off! Call 512-448-3727, Sugar People are standing by to take your order!
Hey Shorty, It's Our Birthday!
By Olivia Guerra O'Neal on 08/23/2012

Can you believe it? It seems like just yesterday when we spent the previous night tossing and turning, hoping and praying that people would show up when we opened our doors.

And show up you did!  Through the past four years our amazing community has supported us through the highs and lows.

Let's take a moment to reminisce:

Highs

~ A line out the door on our first day!
~ Lots of local love from the blogging community, media and YOU!
~ Raising over $4,000 through the last few years for Austin Pets Alive
~ Being able to donate to over ONE HUNDRED local charities over the past four years
~ A recipe published in Williams Sonoma
~ Three consecutive years of love in Fearless Critic
~ Being named Best Sweets in the Austin Chronicle Poll
~ Being able to create 12 new jobs for the Austin economy, and expanding our space

Lows

~ The Oven Fire of 2009 - the City of Austin's faulty wiring blew up our oven and even though they never apologized and told us to take a hike and YOU helped us recover with your support
~The break in when all of our Austin Pets Alive donations were stolen and YOU helped us raise TEN TIMES the amount that had been stolen

Notice a theme here? Lots of highs and very few lows, and we got through them due to YOUR support.

We know there are many choices out there for desserts, but we are proud to call ourselves Austin's first retro style dessert bakery and we are here today all because of YOU!

We want to say thank you, and we have something very sweet in store in the upcoming weeks. We have a slight delay while waiting for some equipment and welcoming the newest member of our family - our little Sugar Baby. But, we promise that what we've got coming is going to make YOU smile.

* Thank you for supporting us.
* Thank you for your feedback to help us grow and be better.
* Thank you for continuing to patronize us, because without your support, we would not be here.
* Thank you for letting us be a part of your weddings, baby showers, birthdays and ever celebration in between. For that, we are so grateful.

Thank you Austin, we love you!

Happy Tuesday Austin!

The expansion is coming along quite nicely and we HOPE to have our delightful new expanded space open by March 27th!  Soon thereafter you'll be able to enjoy some tasty breakfast pastries and dessert inspired coffee drinks under our snazzy new starburst light in our petite dining room. We can't wait and hope you're looking forward to it as well. :)

We are also making some changes to our cupcake menu!  You will be saying goodbye to a few flavors, but know that you can still order them by the dozen with 24 hours notice.  We'll be rolling out our improved website by April 1 with the changes but two of the flavors we're saying goodbye to are Root Beer Float and Pina Colada.  Come get your while they are still on the menu for the new few weeks!

We are also ready to roll out our new vegan cupcake menu that our beloved vegan baker, Strawberry Shortkick, has been working on day and night.  Here's a sneak peek of some of our upcoming vegan flavors.  You'll notice that some of your favorites like Birthday Cake will still be here, and others like Mud Pie are back by popular request. There are also some new ones that we can't wait to share:
  • French Toast (V)
  • Chocolate Covered Cherry (V)
  • Mud Pie (V)
  • Pina Colada (V)
  • Black Forest (V)
